What is School Fencing?

School fencing keeps pupils and staff safe from intruders and prevents truancy, yet it must also appear welcoming to pupils, parents and visitors. In addition, fencing around playgrounds or sports fields often has to stop balls from straying. We have 100 years’ experience in school fencing, so our knowledgeable team can help you find the right balance between security, aesthetics and cost. As well as school perimeter fencing, pedestrian gates and turnstiles, we also supply and install rising arm barriers and automated gates for controlling vehicular movements, complete with suitable access controls.

Our fencing is used by local education authorities, nurseries and infant schools, free schools, academies, comprehensive schools, grammar schools, faith schools, school trusts, independent schools, public schools, universities, apprentice training facilities and other educational establishments.

To complement our fencing and gates, other products from our extensive portfolio are popular with schools, from bin stores and bicycle shelters to seating and tree grilles – not forgetting playground equipment. If none of our standard products matches your requirements, we can source alternatives or design, manufacture and install bespoke items. No other supplier offers such a complete portfolio of standard products plus the in-house capability for customisation.

What are the key features of school fencing?

Fencing for schools will usually have a greater emphasis on aesthetics than, for example, industrial or commercial fencing. All of our steel fencing, railings and gates are hot-dip galvanised, and for most school projects we apply an additional polyester powder coat. This tough, long-lasting finish is virtually maintenance-free. Standard colours are green and black but schools normally specify one or more colours, either to enhance the aesthetic or match the school’s colours.

When working on projects for schools, especially fencing for playgrounds and sports grounds, our designers and installation teams take particular care to avoid leaving any sharp edges.

Security is vital to keep pupils and staff safe during the day and to prevent truancy; it is also important to protect against intruders at other times, as theft and arson are considerable threats for some schools. Clearly the need is not the same at every school, so we can help you perform a risk assessment and establish the current threat level; only then can an appropriate fencing scheme be proposed.

All of our fences meet relevant standards – such as BS 1722 (Fencing) and BS EN 1176 (Playground equipment and surfacing) – and our powered and automatic gates are CE marked to the Machinery Directive. Schools often require fencing and gates that are ‘Secured by Design’ so, as an SBD-accredited installer, we provide a range of fencing and gates that comply with this nationally-recognised Official Police Security Initiative.

Our work

For over 100 years we have been designing, manufacturing and installing high-quality fencing and gates for schools. Today we lead the market, so you can be sure that we have the knowledge and experience to meet your requirements.

Most importantly, we can undertake the installation at a time that is convenient for you, which usually means the summer holidays, though smaller projects can be completed at other times including half-term breaks and weekends.

A new-build school project in which we were heavily involved was Ysgol Bae Baglan.  Luke Owen, Bouygues UK’s quantity surveyor for the project, was very pleased, saying: “Procter Contracts successfully delivered the fencing and street furniture package at Ysgol Bae Baglan. There was a broad spectrum of products from bespoke feature gates to conceptual seating, then to your more common items such as Secure by Design fencing, cycle shelters, bollards and the like.

“The products that were manufactured by Procter were of an excellent standard and they were able to significantly reduce lead in times which was fantastic on such a fast-paced project.

“The high standards of the design and manufacture process were replicated by the site installation process. Procter adequately resourced the project to achieve increasingly stringent programme constraints.”

Another new-build project was for the Skinners’ Academy in Hackney. We supplied and installed ornamental railings along the roadside boundary and high-security mesh panel Pro-sure 358 fencing at the rear of the site. There were also two powered and four manual swing gates, and a key part of the project was the customised cantilevered sliding gates that control access through two openings 8m wide. The client was delighted with all aspects of our work and the products installed.
