Project Type

Urban Development Fencing & Gates

Location

Leeds, UK

The Background

Procter Contracts partnered with Galliford Try on the prestigious Leeds Monk Bridge development — a project that combines historic viaducts with modern residential and communal spaces.

Our role was to design, manufacture, and install fencing and gate systems that:

  • Enhanced safety and accessibility

  • Complemented the site’s unique architectural character

  • Created secure, inviting communal areas

Project scope included:

  • 215m of 2.4m pro-mesh fencing for long-term durability and security

  • 200m of pedestrian guard rail to improve public safety

  • Custom perforated sheet metal compounds and bike enclosures for storage and visual cohesion

  • 66m of MUGA fencing installed atop the viaduct

  • 33m of 2.4m palisade fencing to strengthen perimeter security

The Solution

Working in a highly restricted site with historic infrastructure, Procter Contracts developed bespoke fencing solutions tailored to the development’s unique requirements.

Key elements of our approach included:

  • Non-standard MUGA foundations designed to provide stability without affecting the viaduct’s integrity

  • Custom perforated compounds and enclosures that were both functional and architecturally sympathetic

  • RAL 7012 grey finishes carefully chosen to harmonise with both the stone viaduct and contemporary residential buildings

Our innovative designs ensured that safety, durability, and aesthetics worked seamlessly together across the development.

Challenges and Collaboration

Delivering fencing on the Monk Bridge project involved overcoming significant challenges:

  • Restricted access & confined spaces: Specialist planning was required for transporting and installing fencing at height.

  • Integration with listed structures: Every design decision was tailored to respect the historic viaduct.

  • Complex logistics: Through close collaboration with Galliford Try and stakeholders, we coordinated solutions that kept the project on time and to specification.

Health, Safety & Sustainability

  • Health & Safety: Our site installer, Chrissy Wyatt, received the Diligence Safety Award from Galliford Try, recognising Procter’s exemplary safety performance on this project.

  • Sustainability: We prioritised recyclable and durable materials, ensuring long-term resilience with minimal environmental impact.

  • Community Impact: The inclusion of the MUGA fencing and bike enclosures supports healthy, active lifestyles and encourages social use of shared spaces.

The Result or Feedback

Our fencing and enclosures played a key role in transforming Leeds Monk Bridge into a vibrant and safe urban community.

Project outcomes included:

  • Safe and accessible communal areas for residents and visitors

  • Durable fencing solutions aligned with the site’s sustainability goals

  • Aesthetic balance between historic heritage and modern architecture

“The Leeds Monk Bridge project is a fantastic example of how Procter Contracts can integrate safety, design, and functionality into complex urban spaces. Our ability to collaborate, innovate, and deliver to exacting standards ensures long-term benefits for both clients and communities.”
