Automatic Gate Safety Standards & Legislation

The most important product-related standards for powered and automatic gates are those that are harmonised to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, a full list of which is available via the European Commission website:

http://ec.europa.eu/growth/single-market/european-standards/harmonised-standards/machinery/

Harmonised standards are categorised as A-type, B-type and C-type standards, so the list below is presented the same way. Additional non-harmonised standards and other documents are listed at the end.

All automatic gates supplied and installed by Procter Contracts comply with relevant standards, regulations and codes of practice.

A-type standards: these specify basic concepts, terminology and design principles applicable to all categories of machinery.

BS EN ISO 12100:2010
Safety of machinery. General principles for design. Risk assessment and risk reduction
B-type standards: these deal with specific aspects of machinery safety or specific types of safeguard that can be used across a wide range of categories of machinery (NB this list is not exhaustive).
BS EN 349:1993 +A1:2008 Safety of machinery. Minimum gaps to avoid crushing of parts of the human body
BS EN 547-1:1996 +A1:2008 Safety of machinery. Human body measurements. Principles for determining the dimensions required for openings for whole body access into machinery
BS EN 547-2:1996 +A1:2008 Safety of machinery. Human body measurements. Principles for determining the dimensions required for access openings
BS EN 547-3:1996 +A1:2008 Safety of machinery.  Human body measurements.  Anthropometric data

C-type standards: these deal with safety requirements for particular types of machine or groups of machine. When a C-type standard deviates from an A-type or B-type standard, the C-type standard takes precedence.
